Sokoto state governor and PHCN staff: A case of human right violation?

“A nation can endure with unbelief but it can not endure with injustice”. Sheik Uthman bn Fodio.

THE Sokoto State Government and staffers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) have, in the last few weeks, been embroiled in a feud that has continued to elicit mixed reactions among Nigerians. The source of the feud is the alleged acts of brutality by the Sokoto State governor, Aliyu Magatakarda Wammakko in the form of an assault on the Business Manger of the Gwiwa Business Unit of the PHCN, Mr Moses Osigwe and two other staff of the company.
According to reports, the governor had invited the PHCN staffers in relation to the persistent power supply problems in Wammakko, the governor’s home town in response to a protest by the community who stormed the Sokoto Government House. What was however supposed to be a consultative meeting between the governor and the PHCN officials was said to have degenerated into a violent scene where, it was alleged, Wammakko “brought out a horse whip and lashed Engineer Moses Osigwe to a pulp”. The Governor did not stop there, the allegations goes, as he (Wammakko) also invited two hefty mobile policemen to continue with the beating spree until the business manager fell on the ground and became unconscious.
