Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) workers have won a major battle as the Federal Government has accepted to sign an agreement with their representatives for the payment of their severance packages, pension and gratuity.
According to the agreement, “three months salary in lieu of notice shall be paid to employees of PHCN that have served more than 10 years and one month salary in lieu of notice for employees that have served less than 10 years.”
The disagreement over the workers’ severance package had remained a major setback in the privatisation of the PHCN and the implementation of the Power Sector Reform Act 2005.
The two parties had been involved in a series of discussions and negotiations since May last year, with a view to resolving the labour liabilities.
But after the last meeting that lasted seven hours at the Office of the Secretary to the Federal Government (SGF) in Abuja, both parties agreed on the claims by the labour unions of PHCN in relation to the labour liabilities.
The SGF, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, presided over the meeting that led to the agreement which he and the Minister of State for Finance, Hajiya Zainab Kuchi, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu and Acting Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Mr. Benjamin Dikki, signed on behalf of the Federal Government.
