Sustaining Power Generation: Critical Look At The Deciding Factors

Although power generation maintained a steady rise towards the end of 2012, Juliet Alohan looks at a number of factors that would determine the sustainability of the trend in 2013.
Power generation remarkably maintained a steady increase towards the end of 2012, rising from a generation peak of 4,321MW attained on August 31, 2012 to 4,349.7MW on December 17. An all-time high peak of 4,502.2MW was eventually attained on December 21, thereby surpassing the generation target of 4,500mw set for December 2012.
This achievement, according to an official statement, was made possible largely due to the coming on stream of new National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP), especially newly commissioned generating units at the thermal power stations in Omotosho and Olorunsogo and increase in gas supply.
