The Federal Government is to spend additional N346 billion for the installation of transmission infrastructure across the country, under the current power reform roadmap. Minister of State for Power, Mrs Zainab Kurchi, who made the disclosure yesterday in Lagos, during a ministerial breakfast discourse, said the amount was needed to enable government achieve its target of attaining 10,000megawatts by December, this year.
She explained that the dearth of transmission infrastructure remains a mission link in the effort of government to meet the power needs of the people considering the giant strides of the Jonathan administration in raising the generation capacity to over 7000megawatts at the moment.
She explained that government had added about 330mega wats through Omotoso, Alaoji and Papalanto while the distribution companies on their part added 321mw to bring the entire capacity to about 733mw Out of the total output generated, she said the government was deliberately warehousing about 1500 megawatts to serve as a fallback in case of emergencies and uncertainties that surround the process. “The transmission strategy is key to delivering power to Nigerians.
