The House of Representatives thursday passed a resolution urging the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to accommodate the financial needs of all the Power Distribution Companies(DISCOS) and Power Generation Companies(GENCOS) in a supplementary budget to enable them discharge their functions of delivering electricity to Nigerians while the process of their privatisation is being perfected.
In a motion sponsored by the Chairman, House Committee on Power, Hon Patrick Ikhariale, and 17 others, the House held that the power sector remained critical to the economy and must not be allowed to suffer from any funding gap.
In a motion sponsored by the Chairman, House Committee on Power, Hon Patrick Ikhariale, and 17 others, the House held that the power sector remained critical to the economy and must not be allowed to suffer from any funding gap.
In the lead debate, Ikhariale said much as the policy of privatisation in the power sector was desirable, its implementation must not be done in such a manner that will leave any break in the process of power generation, transmission and distribution.
He disclosed that the power distribution and generation companies awarded various contracts under the 2012 budget which have been completed but have not been paid for because the third and fourth quarter releases from last year’s budget which should have been used for that purpose were never released.
He said the contractors who did the jobs were currently on the neck of these companies particularly as there was no provision for them in the 2013 budget.
