No more free meter for electricity consumers

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) said that PHCN’s customers could now pay for their meters to bridge the metering gap in the power sector.

The NERC chairman, Sam Amadi, stated this at a one-day stakeholders meeting on Credited Advance Payment for Meter Installation (CAPMI) which held in Abuja.
`` Globally, customers in the industry do not pay for meters once they pay their bills, hence on June 1, 2012, NERC told consumers who pay bills not to pay for meters.
``This is because the gap of 50 per cent of customers in the country that require meters needed time which we benchmarked to 18 months.
``But six months after that June 1, when the policy was roll out, we assessed it and found that the policy performance is not satisfactory,’’ he said.
Amadi explained that under the Multi-Year –Tariff –Order, NERC was expected to increase or decrease tariff rate every three or five years, but added that it had not been working because of certain policies.
He said some customers started calling, requesting assistance to help meet their metering challenges.
According to him, the customers’ say they are prepared to collaborate with Distribution Company (DISCO) to hasten the process of securing meters.
