With the recent handover of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to Manitoba Hydro International of Canada, Ejiofor Alike writes that the management contract should not end up like Pentascope and NITEL deal

Nigeria’s power sector marked a turning point recently when the Federal Government handed over the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to a Canadian firm, Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) on a three-year management contract.
TCN is one of the 18 companies unbundled from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN.)

It seeks to function as a Transmission Services Provider (TSP), a System Operator (SO) and a Market Operator (MO).
The objective of the management contract is to facilitate the transition of TCN into a financially sustainable, stable, self-sufficient and market-driven company.
MHI has stated that one of its major focuses would be to reorganise TCN and ensure that the TSP becomes a separate entity from the MO and SO in a bid to allow it to become a privatised commercial company.
