Despite the acute shortage of power across the country,
available data shows that an estimated 1, 200 Mega Watts (MW) of electricity
generation capacity is dormant.
A daily operational report by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN),
exclusively obtained last week by **Daily Independent** shows that this large
volume of electricity generation capacity, which capable of boosting the
dwindling power supply was not generated because of the unavailability of
gas.
The report shows that the country which has a total of 5, 200 MW capacity,
generated 3, 670.3 MW off peak generation as at Tuesday, March 26, 2013.
A breakdown of peak and off peak generation (nationwide) in the daily
operational report, shows that Kainji Hydro with 162 MW peak generation capacity
could only muster145MW off peak generation; Jebba Hydro with 354MW peak capacity
could only generate 363MW off peak; Shiroro Hydro was worse generating 238MW,
out of the 260MW peak generation.
For the thermal plants fared better, Egbin Steam with 713 MW peak generation,
came up with 718MW off peak generation; Sapele Steam, with 79MW peak had 77MW
off peak generation; Delta Gas with peak generation of 135MW had 100MW off peak
generation; Afam IV-V Gas plant with 65MW (pg) came up with 65MW off peak
generation (opg) Omotosho Gas plant with 80.7MW peak generation had 78.9MW off
peak generation
