Chairman/CEO of Geometric Power Limited, Prof. Barth Nnaji, in this interview with JULIET ALOHAN, speaks on the multi-million dollar Aba power project. Excerpts
What is the scope and capacity of the Aba power project?
Based on the leased agreement made by Aba Power with the Federal Government, we attracted investors and banks to develop the project. The investment has allowed us to build a 141megawatts power plant in phase one and we are going to add another 47MW within a year, to bring it to 188MW.
This first phase also has a gas pipeline of 27km from Owaza, near Imo River, to the power plant and has over 100km of 33KV lines. The intention is to be able to transport power efficiently to various substations for distribution. We are also doing 11KV network, so that there is upgrading of the distribution network. When we came into Aba, we found out that there were only three substations that belonged to PHCN. So even if they had all the power that Aba people needed, they couldn’t distribute because of the constraint of the substations. So we began to build four brand new substations to bring the number to seven, each one 2X15MVA, so we now have seven 2X15MVA substations in Aba. Right now there are three 60MVA transformers in the place, and I am very pleased to say that in about a month and half, we should begin to fire the units.
