Blackout imminent as transmission tower collapses

FG spends N860bn to settle PHCN workers
A major power outage appears imminent in the country as the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, yesterday raised an alarm over the collapse of its transmission tower no. 69 on the Afam-Alaoji132kv double circuit transmission line.
TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs. Seun Olagunju, in a statement disclosed that the incident occurred on December 19, during the restringing of the vandalised sections of the 132kv double circuit transmission line.
He noted that the contractor handling the job was mid-way through restringing the vandalized line when the tower collapsed. Electricity supplied through the 132kv double circuit transmission line helps to augment power supply to Port Harcourt to avoid overloading the 150MVA transformer at Afam whenever it was not available.
Although the effect of the loss of the 132kv transmission line would not be felt immediately, due to the fact that most industries have closed for the holidays, the company said that its quick response engineering team was already on ground to assess the level of damage and ameliorate the effect of the loss of the line.
