The National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, on Sunday accused the Federal Government of betrayal.
This follows the alleged government’s failure to fulfill the pact both parties reached before the sale and formal hand over of 14 privatised power assets to new investors.
According to the NUEE, part of the agreement was the payment of severance packages and pension to the over 45,000 workers.
In a letter signed by its General Secretary, Joe Ajaero, the union issued a 14-day ultimatum for payment of severance entitlement to over 10,000 workers of the unbundled Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, warning that failure to do so would lead to total shut down of the sector.
The union accused the Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE, of insincerity in handling the privatisation of the power sector assets, saying “funds meant for the payment of staff entitlement in excess of over N100 billion have developed wings overnight, as the BPE, the Ministry of Power, and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation are unable to explain the whereabouts of the money”.
