The Federal Governmnent on Tuesday inaugurated the Presidential Technical Committee on the structure and Management Framework for the Atomic Energy Sector in Nigeria, to boost alternative energy sources, including the nuclear energy.
According to the National Program for the Deployment of Nuclear Power for Generation of Electricity, in 2007 Nigeria established plans to develop up to 4,000 MW of nuclear capacity by 2027. The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission NAEC, was earlier created in 1976 but was not activated until 2006.
Nigeria still needs about 55,000 MW of electricity with it's need put at 60,000MW, and a current generation of about 4,500MW from hydro and recently, gas to power plants.
Speaking while inaugurating the Presidential committee on Tuesday, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, said the committee is charged with the responsibilities of among other things, the study of the current national management framework of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission and its Centers and suggest appropriate mechanisms
