President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday sacked Director General of the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE), Bolanle Ayodele Onagoruwa.
Although no reasons were given, the action is coming barely one year after a Senate panel that investigated the privatisation of government assets in the last decade indicted the BPE boss and recommended her sack.
The announcement of Onagoruwa’s sack sparked off a wave of jubilation by workers of the organisation.
The Senate panel’s 172-page report accused her of fraud and gross incompetence in the management of the bureau.
The panel members particularly expressed their dismay over her role in the sale of the Federal Government’s five per cent residual shares in Eleme Petrochemical Company Limited, which they considered illegal and fraudulent.
According to the report, “She should be relieved of her duty… The management of BPE should be reorganised to make it effective and efficient.”
A statement on Tuesday by the office of the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, which supervises BPE directed Onagoruwa to hand over to the most senior Director in the bureau, Benjamin Ezra Dikki, to act in her place.
The three-paragraph statement signed by the Vice President’s spokesman, Umar Sani, said: “Mr. President extends his sincere appreciation to Ms. Bolanle Onagoruwa for her services to the nation and wishes her the best in her future endeavours.”
