Chief Executive Officer, Eko Electricity Distribution Company, Oladele Amoda, speaks with POWER TALKBACK on estimated billing, NIPPs and others
Why is the power supply problem in Lekki and its environs lingering?
It is unfortunate that the Lekki and surrounding problem has existed for so long. But we are glad that the end of the problem is approaching. Ever since that area came into existence about 20 years ago, the same 2×60 MVA transformer has been servicing the area. But there has been an unprecedented development such that the transformer is grossly overloaded and we are only able to give about 50 per cent of the energy requirement of the area. But the Federal Government has approved and released a 2X100MVA transformer to back it up. We have commenced the installation of one of the transformers. This should be completed by mid-January. After that, we will start installing the second transformer. Once the first one is installed, there will be tremendous relief to the residents of Lekki, Victoria Garden City and environs. Our team goes there almost every day to monitor the progress of work. Apart from the 2X100MVA transformer, the ministry of power recently approved a 60MVA mobile transformer for transmission. It will be taken to the 2X60MVA project site of the National independent Power Project in the Jakande Low-Cost Housing Estate area. Since it will take some time to complete the construction, approval was given to move the mobile transformer and connect it to the line there. Another transmission project is being planned for the Lekki/Epe area to take care of future development. All we ask is that our customers should bear with us. We apologise for the inconveniences of the past, but they will soon be over. Perhaps another thing that customers have complained about is the fixed charge. Even before the MYTO II regime, the operators of small and medium enterprises had complained that it was too high and affecting their business. NERC is sorting out the problem. Our duty is to pass complaints from customers to them. They may come up with an adjusted tariff for the business people.
