The Federal Government on Friday expressed concern over the rising indebtedness of power transmission companies to their distribution counterparts.
The debt is put at N20bn.
The government said the situation, if not checked, was capable of negatively affecting its desire to improve power supply.
Vice-President Namadi Sambo made the government’s position known at a meeting of stakeholders held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Sambo set up a committee saddled with the responsibility of assessing the situation.
He stressed the need for the transmission companies to honour the contracts they signed with the Federal Government.
He noted that non-payment for government investment on power may affect the smooth operation of the sector since the government is investing heavily on gas and other components to enable the sector to function.
The vice-president also observed that the accumulating debt was capable of thwarting government’s purpose of building the sector which includes job creation and provision of constant electricity to Nigerians
