Jonathan approves N384b jumbo pay for PHCN staff

President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the sum of N384 billion for immediate payment to the staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN.
Briefing State House correspondents yesterday, the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, said the amount represent all outstanding benefits due to the workers after a biometric exercise jointly carried by the government and the labour unions in the sector.
While assuring that the payment will be carried out transparently, the Minister enjoined the unions in the sector to cooperate with government to ensure completion of payment as soon as possible.
Wogu, who was flanked by the Presidential Adviser on Media, Dr Reuben Abati, spoke further, "I want to inform you that the agreed benefits accruing to the staff of PHCN in the last negotiation between government and the Labour Unions has been approved by the President Goodluck Jonathan.
"The total package is approximately N384 billion in full payment of all outstanding benefits that we agreed upon. It will be done within the best principle of transparency and accountability.
"Payment of the agreed sum will commence immediately and that brings the issue of non-payment of benefits to an end. So, we enjoin labour unions in the power sector to work closely with the Ministry of Power in the payment of these benefits as agreed. The process will commence tomorrow and I want to assure them that this bring to an end the labour issue in the sector", the Minister said.
