Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, has said that the current electricity tariff charges are not cost reflective and may be unsustainable for the expected increased constant and reliable electricity services.
Nebo, who stated that the country’s tariff charges have remained low because government is subsidizing it noted that currently Nigeria still has the lowest tariff in Africa. He said Nigerians had better be prepared to start doing things right if the expectations for improved electric power service delivery would be achieved.
He hinted that, like in the telecoms industry, electricity tariffs charges may be jacked as the private investors take over but assured that the charges are likely to crash as the market stabilizes. “For the ordinary person in the street, you see that initially, you are now paying some huge money.
The cost reflective tariffs are not truly cost reflective and for the fourth estate of the realm, don’t forget that Nigeria still has the lowest tariff in Africa.
