In this analysis, SYLVANUS OMOREGIE, an Abuja-based freelance journalist, looks at the power sector reform embarked upon by the President Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government and makes a prognosis of a better future for electricity consumers in the country.
IT was the Chief Executive Officer, Eko Electricity Distribution Company, Mr Oladele Amoda, who gave an inkling into the miasma of activities that characterised the power sector before the reform that culminated in the sale and handover of Generation Companies (GENCOs) and Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to private owners last week, when he said, “what appeared like an impossible task when it began almost a decade ago is today ending on a very happy and hopeful note.”
What Amoda did not say was that the politics of the sector had led to failed promises; claimed many a political and technocratic career; and dented the integrity of many. Prominent amongst which was the sack of Power Ministers Chief Bola Ige and Prof Barth Nnaji; the sack of the entire National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) management boards; and a string of other actions by an impatient former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
