The 45-day deadline given to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria and electricity distribution companies across the country by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to supply meters to consumers who have paid for them is not likely to be met, sources at NERC and some of the companies have confirmed.
Our correspondent gathered on Monday that the issue had generated serious controversy, and series of meetings were currently being held to salvage the situation.
Stakeholders in the electricity sector had met on the issue last Thursday and held another meeting on Monday.
Our correspondent learnt that issues regarding metering had not been concluded, hence more meetings might be held to resolve the issue.
NERC had on January 23 this year ordered all Discos to supply meters to customers who had paid for them.
Last week, the Chairman, NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi, had told our correspondent that the backlog of customers who had paid for meters and yet to get them would be cleared within 45 days.
He also said other customers who had no meters but were willing to pay for them would have to wait until a supply programme, which was being developed, was concluded.
Amadi explained that customers to be covered by the 45-day window must have paid for their meters before June 1, 2012 when electricity tariffs across the country were last reviewed.
