When the Federal Government announced that it has approved the payment of N384 billion to settle emoluments of the ‘sacked workers’ of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), it was widely celebrated in the private sector with the hope that it will pave the way for eventual take over and successful transmission of the power stations.
However, the National Union of Electricity Employee (NUEE) described the claims by the Federal Government, through the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, as highly provocative and insulting, stressing that the body charged with the responsibility of ensuring accurate computation of exit package of PHCN staff is yet to conclude its assignment.
General Secretary of the association, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said the purported payment is an open deceit against Nigerians.
“It is instructive to remind government that the Technical Committee comprising of government appointed actuarist – Alexander Forbes; Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), PHCN and the in-house unions charged with the responsibility of ensuring accurate computation of exit package of PHCN staff is yet to conclude its assignment.
“The Alexander Forbes and BPE officials have discovered and accepted fundamental errors in the data used for their computation in the course of the committee’s discussion and thus agreed to reconvene on a later date so that they could address grey areas.
“It is, therefore, amasing that figures can be conjured to calculate the exit benefits without reference to the Technical Committee,” he stated.
