Nigeria’s power sector remains one area in the economy that has defied every mechanism of various administrations in the recent past. At a time, it was suggested that any government in Nigeria that adopts transformation of the power sector as its sole agenda and is able to reform the recalcitrant sector has surpassed the rest.
President Goodluck Jonathan was not unaware of this Rock of Gibraltar when he contested and won the presidential election in 2011. Many people would not take him seriously in his promises of stable power supply. The reason is not far-fetched: it has become a mantra of preceding administrations, and the result has remained stillborn.
As a patriotic citizen of this country, the greatest worry has been the electricity sector. The growth of any aspect of Nigeria’s economy cannot be attained unless the electricity sector is restored. The belief that there is a clique who do not want Nigeria’s power sector to thrive for their clandestine reasons is becoming evident because some countries far less developed, such as Benin Republic and Ghana, have got stability in their electric supply. Surprisingly, these countries do not have the quantity of gas Nigeria has. The existence of this clique and its fighting spirit made it impossible for someone like Chief Bola Ige to fail in his patriotic attempt to radically improve electricity supply in the country as minister of power.
