Posers as $8b NIPP fund produces paltry 786mw

• Ondo, Edo ‘Refuse To Pay’
THE gap allegedly created by Edo and Ondo States notwithstanding, the projected $8 billion required for “full” implementation of the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) may have been contributed by stakeholder governments.
But the snag is that only a paltry addition of 786 megawatts of electricity has, so far, been gained through the fund.
Information from official quarters indicates that the three tiers of government contributed $5.75 billion on the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) as at March 2012 out of which half was spent. But, with the exception of Edo and Ondo, there are indications that all other states and local governments are now up-to-date with their commitments to the $8 billion NIPP fund.
Although deductions are made at source, contributing governments are expected to authorise such deductions before they are done. The two states of Edo and Ondo are yet to issue such authorisation and are, therefore, deemed to be technically indebted to the scheme.
It was gathered that, to offset equipment manufacturing, plants and other related costs, contractors had drawn a substantial amount of the fund contributed from the three tiers of government.
