As Nigeria set to handover electricity sector to private operators, Minister of Mower, Prof Chinedu Nebo, has disclosed that the country is capable of generating 40,000 megawatts of electricity by year 2020.
Nebo, who dropped the hint yesterday at the third Worldstage National Electricity Power Conference 2013 in Lagos, expressed optimism that the nation would soon witness a dramatic turnaround in the sector, which would set the nation for a greater height industrially.
The Power Minister, who was represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Federal Ministry of Power, Dr. Nuhu Sada, said: “To realise this feat, other areas such as coal to power, wind, small hydro projects are being vigorously pursued by the Jonathan administration to be able to generate 40,000 megawatts by the year 2020.”
President of Manufacturers Association Nigeria (MAN), Chief Kola Jamodu, said that the manufacturers in the country had been facing some power supply challenges, pointing out that they had only been getting 1,018 megawatts from Power Holding Company of Nigeria Plc (PHCN) as against an average peak hour power demand of 4,850 megawatts.
