Why PHCN prepaid meter scheme may fail

Over the years, electricity generation and distribution have been major problems to power supply in Nigeria. Added to this, are the problems of correct billing and meter reading to consumers. It is as a result of these challenges that pre-paid meter was introduced. At least, to take care of billing and meter reading. With pre-paid meter, you don’t need to complain over excess billing and meter reading, because you monitor your consumption yourself.
One of the legacies of Prof. Barth Nnaji during his tenure as the Minister of Power was his insistence that pre-paid meter be given and installed free to final consumers. It was also during his brief tenure that Nigerians experienced constant power supply nationwide. But unfortunately, like everything Nigeria, he did not stay long to actualise his dream and implement it. Though a few people received the pre-paid meter free and others paid for theirs, but that was the end of it. And so, Nnaji gave way for those who prefer to keep Nigerians in darkness and exploit them. We threw away the baby and the bath water. Several months after his exit on spurious accusation, Nnaji’s accusers could not do a better job as the power situation has gone from bad to worse.
