Labour unions and activists in the power sector fear the disengagement of thousands of workers from the former Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) will throw up more unemployment challenges. Recruiters and human resource practitioners however disagree, MESHACK IDEHEN writes.
For the almost 47, 000 recently disengaged workers that constitutes the bulk of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE),and the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), all hopes for gainful employment within and outside the power sector is not lost, as experts said the ex workers are still employable and remain relevant.
Coming from established head hunters and human resource practitioners, Analysts said this views have become imperative following unending worries and anxiety continually being expressed in some quarters that the already saturated labour market in the country will become hyper imploded, when consideration is given to the large number of active and potential workers that have been made redundant by the power sector reforms.
Notwithstanding, the Chairman of Lagos Chapter of NUEE, Mr. Adeleke Ibrahim, told our correspondent recently when leading one of the many protests preceding the disbursement of severance package for electricity workers, that the Federal Government’s reasons for not having the money or will to fully implement the reforms is a challenge as much as the fears of the workers on their future in the post power sector reform era.
