JOS - The Managing Director of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC), Mr Fidelis Obishai, has advised new owners in the electricity sector to train the workers.

Obishai said this would enable them change their orientation from the public to a private sector-driven system.

“I expect a very smooth transition, but the new owners must train and re-train the workers to change their orientation from the usual thing that is obtainable in the public sector to what is expected of them in the new system,’’ he said.

Obishai told newsmen that such training was very crucial for efficiency since the workers had been under the public sector over the years.

He said it was crucial for them to know that they may have to be at work for longer hours, while lame excuses would not be condoned.

The JEDC official also called for massive investment in metering, saying it was necessary to boost service delivery and minimise time-wasting on meter reading and other tasks.

Obishai advised the workers to make the utmost use of the new development, which he described as a “win-win situation’’ for electricity workers.

“The atmosphere is going to be very challenging. But I expect the workers to take advantage of the new environment to put in their best as merit will be the watchword,’’ he said.

The JEDC managing director also advised the workers to make the best use of the proceeds from their severance packages.
