Here is a look at Nigeria's plans to sell off 11 distribution and six generation
companies as part of plans to privatise its ineffectual power sector:
For an INSIGHT story on power reforms:
* Nigeria, with an estimated population of more than 160 million people,
currently has capacity to generate approximately 6GW (6,000 megawatts) of
electricity although only about 4GW is actually generated. Trends from developed
nations show that approximately 1GW of generating capacity is required for each
million head of population, Nigeria is facing a huge capacity shortfall.
Presently Nigeria's state power firm, the Power Holding Co of Nigeria (PHCN),
with around 48,000 staff, only produces enough power to supply a European city.
Through privatisation and other reforms Nigeria has an ambitious target of
building generating capacity to 40GW by 2020.
* PHCN does not collect its own bills efficiently from consumers and sells
power at government-subsidised rather than market rates. Nigeria has put in
place a new higher tariff system which it says is commercially attractive.
