SIR: The arbitrary increase of electricity tariff by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) Plc is worrisome. It is necessary for Nigerians to shout to the high heavens and force a reverse or stop to the trend. The government is always eager to frustrate and impoverish Nigerians with various lopsided ideas they call policies.
The advent of the digital prepaid meter gladdened the heart of the populace being on ‘Pay-as-you-go’ platform, in which case, users only pay for the electricity consumed, or so we thought. Alas! We were recently greeted with a funny increase in the ‘Fixed Charge’ from N75 to N500 per month. A neighbour of mine went to reload his card after about six months of the first credit after the meter installation. The new reload did not last up to two weeks. A closer scrutiny of the new credit voucher placed side-by-side with the first one clearly shows that this fixed charge is no longer N75. It was gathered afterwards that this N500 fixed charge is monthly. Note that this is for R2 tariff class (residential). It may vary with other customers.
